Administration officials confirmed the initiation of government employee terminations on the end of the week, making good on earlier warnings linked to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to stretch into its third consecutive week.

Official Announcement and Early Information

Russell Vought posted on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” referring to the government’s process for letting employees go.

While the official did not specify which departments were affected, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that layoff warnings had been distributed within that agency. Furthermore, a DHS representative indicated that layoffs would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a union for federal workers confirmed that employees at the Education Department would be affected by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Legal Challenges

Labor representatives warned that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on services relied upon by the public and vowed to challenge the moves in court.

“It is disgraceful that the administration has used the funding lapse as an pretext to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who provide essential functions to communities across the country,” said Everett Kelley, representing the AFGE.

Political Standoff and Budget Dispute

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to support a GOP-supported legislation to reopen the government unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. Following repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until the following week, meaning the standoff is not expected to be ended soon.

At a media briefing, the Republican House speaker, Mike Johnson, blasted Senate Democrats for not supporting the Republican proposal, which was approved in the House on a near party-line vote.
